A breakthrough proposal signed yesterday will close the agingDiablo Nuclear Power Plant and replace it with clean energy — ledby energy efficiency and wind and solar power — saving consumers atleast $1 billion.

Minghua,
NRDC helped make history yesterday.
We negotiated a landmark proposal with Pacific Gas &
ElectricCompany (PG&E), labor unions and other environmental
groups toclose the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant and replace
theelectricity it generated with zero-emissions energy.
This is the
first time ever that a nuclear plant will besubstituted with 100
percent clean and renewableenergy.
The agreement will end a chapter in California's energy history
byclosing the state's last operating nuclear power
plant. Andit puts
California on the forefront of the global transition toclean
energy, striking another blow against
climatechange.
But this groundbreaking victory was only possible thanks to
thelong-term support of thousands of NRDC members and supporters
inCalifornia — like you. Thank
you.
Read more about this unprecedented win for cleanenergy online in my
blog post at NRDC.org.
The milestone
agreement closing Diablo Canyon will savecustomers more than $1
billion. And it's been met
withenthusiasm by labor unions that support its extensive measures
toensure plant workers and the local communities are
treatedfairly.
Under the agreement negotiated with our partner Friends of
theEarth, PG&E will retire its Diablo Canyon nuclear reactors
in2024 and 2025, replacing the electricity they generate with
gainsin energy efficiency, renewable power like wind and solar,
andpollution-free energy technologies.
The advantages
of this agreement will ultimately ripplewell beyond
California. This momentous
plan can bereplicated around the country — where nearly 100 nuclear
reactorswill be retired in the coming decades — and around the
world.
Right now, America's nuclear reactors provide about 20 percent
ofour electricity nationwide. But the Energy Department tells us
thatby 2050 we can get nearly two-thirds of our electricity from
thewind and sun.
We're on our way. Last year, 62 percent of
all new electricgenerating capacity installed in our country was
powered by solaror wind, and growth in electricity is
slowingdramatically, thanks largely to energy
efficiencyimprovements.
Closing Diablo
Canyon will also make the state's energygrid more
flexible. You can't swiftly
ramp a nuclear plantup or down. The reactor rumbles along
continuously, regardless ofchanges in demand or access to
electricity from renewable energysources. For that reason, Diablo
Canyon has been blocking solar andother renewables from coming
online in California.
The proposal signed yesterday shows how we can keep the
momentumgoing, and that's what
it's going to take to protect futuregenerations from the growing
dangers of climatechange.
Get the story behind theagreement in a blog post from Ralph
Cavanagh, co-director of NRDC'sEnergy program.
With you on our side, we're building California's clean
energyfuture now. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rhea Suh
President, NRDC
